Bird watching at its most interesting !
Lorong Halus Wetland, along Serangoon Reservoir, collects and treats water passing through the former landfill, preventing it from flowing into the reservoir. Like the Sengkang Floating Wetland, the Lorong Halus Wetland is developing into a natural habitat for wildlife.
An educational kiosk on the functions of wetlands and a wetland trail have transformed this piece of land into a learning haven for school children.
In earlier times, it was a very rich area of mangrove, mudflats and ponds adjoining the Serangoon Estuary. During annual migrations, waterbirds in their tens of thousands used to swarm here to feed voraciously – including some globally threatened species such as the Chinese Egret, Asian Dowitcher, Nordmann’s Greenshank and Spoon-billed Sandpiper. Stints, sandpipers and plovers could be seen by the droves on the mudflats while scores of egrets and herons were to be observed feeding in the estuary, grasslands and ponds. This is the only home of the nationally threatened Little Grebe.
Tranquil and green. Walk, cycle, photograph.
