The ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre

Singapore’s first facility dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade and injured native wild animals.

  • The AWRC story began with one little monkey who was a long way from home. A monkey named Blue. In 2003, following a tip-off, ACRES found Blue – a scared, lonely vervet monkey, chained up in a cage at a factory, a long way from his native Africa. There was nowhere in Singapore for him to go. Determined that Blue would have a second chance at life, ACRES arranged a new home for him at the Munda Wanga sanctuary in Zambia, and sent him home in 2004.
  • The Animal Concerns Research and Educational Society is an animal protection organisation, driven by concern for animals. The research findings from research projects on the use of animals in various fields, is used to educate the public to promote active community involvement in the animal protection movement.
  • ACRES believes in promoting community involvement in addressing animal protection issues and in building partnerships with all related bodies to improve animal welfare.
  • There are a number of ways to show your support – donate, become a member, become a benefactor, raise funds, remember the animals in your will, buy merchandise, spread the word.

WildAid

  • The illegal wildlife trade is a multi-billion dollar global industry largely driven by consumer demand in expanding economies. WildAid works to reduce global consumption of wildlife products and to increase local support for conservation efforts.
  • Animals are needlessly slaughtered by humans for their body parts. The tiger is killed for its bone … the elephant for its meat … the rhino for its horn … the turtle for its shell … and the bear for its gall bladder.
  • WildAid also works with governments and partners to protect fragile marine reserves from illegal fishing and shark finning, to enhance public and political will for anti-poaching efforts, and to reduce climate change impacts.

When the buying stops, the killing can too.

  • Using science to discover and understand the natural world to help engage and inspire decision-makers, communities and millions of supporters to take action to protect the wildlife and wild places we all care about.
  • WCS scientists study what wildlife species need to thrive. With this knowledge underpins investments in abating threats to wildlife within their most important strongholds and the corridors that connect them. WCS target large, iconic, wide-ranging species because of their intrinsic value and because they are vital to ecosystem health. By saving them, we protect all other biodiversity that shelters under their conservation canopy.

Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (WRRC)

  • Offers native wildlife – most commonly snakes, birds and monkeys – a space for rest and recuperation after injury due to displacement or disorientation – often a result of unplanned and often haphazard attempts at urbanization and urban development.
  • WRRC also follows the lives of thousands of captive elephants across India and documents their plight to reveal the highly inadequate and compromised conditions they endure every day – the artificial environments where they are used for religious, tourism or entertainment purposes.
  • WRRC has set up an Elephant Care Facility (ECF) in Malur, Karnataka, a lifelong care facility for two female, formerly abused captive elephants.
