Inspired by the traditional Chinese belief that cranes symbolise longevity, abundance and good luck, this magnificent 10 minute show is about the courtship of two giant mechanical cranes and how their love for each other transforms them into ‘real’ birds.
The whole structure weighs over 500 tonnes (about the same as two Airbus planes), and the cranes themselves are 30m tall and weigh 80 tonnes each. Each crane is powered by four hydraulic power units (each powerful enough to fly a small aircraft) and rotates on six axes. Each performance uses 36,720 litres of sea water to form the cranes’ 25m long ‘water wings’.
