One of the best ‘outings’ for children (and anybody else) in Singapore and one of the most beautiful zoos in the world.
A 28 hectare secondary forest surrounded by the tranquil waters of the Seletar Reservoir.
Set in a rainforest environment, the ‘open concept’ Zoo features a number of geographical zones – spacious, landscaped environments replicating natural habitats. The mammals, birds and reptiles are separated from each other and visitors by rock walls and natural barriers such as moats. The Zoo’s on-going focus is on being an open, learning experience about wildlife, and interactive, educational content has become a feature of all exhibits.
The Zoo is known globally for its conservation initiatives and breeding programmes. The intermingling of ecological and cultural elements in the exhibits highlight the importance of recognizing and preserving the intricate web of life linking all living organisms (humans included).
The Zoo is home to the world’s largest captive orangutan group. In 2000, through the artificial insemination of primates, the Zoo spearheaded a first in ‘conservation’ efforts. There have been many successful births of the endangered orangutan since then, with some of the primates being sent to Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Malaysia for breeding programmes.
